UMass football announces local walk-ons

UMass officially announced this morning the addition of eight walk-ons to its 2014 recruiting class for football. Five of the eight hail from the Bay State, including Doherty wide receiver Alfred Adarkwah and former Brockton two-way lineman Joe Previte.

The 6-foot-4 Adarkwah had one of the most impressive playoff campaigns in last fall's inaugural MIAA State Tournament, catching nine passes for seven touchdowns in four games, including a 41-yard score in the Highlanders' D4 state title victory over Dennis-Yarmouth. Previte was an ESPN Boston All-State selection in 2012 after helping lead Brockton to its first MIAA Division 1 Super Bowl appearance in four years. He comes to UMass after a post-graduate season at Northfield Mt. Hermon.

Also included in this list is Thornton Academy (Maine) athlete Andrew Libby, who was named Gatorade Player of the Year for Maine in 2012 as a junior but missed most of 2013 due to injury.

Joe Previte - OL/DL - 6-2/285 lbs - Brockton, Mass. - Northfield Mt. Hermon

Jeremy Rodriguez - DB - 6-2/205 lbs - Hillsdale, N.J. - East Coast (MA) Prep

Matthew Wylie - PK - 6-5/190 lbs - Dripping Springs, Texas - Dripping Springs HS

Here are some bios UMass provided on the local walk-ons:

Alfred Adarkwah - WR - 6-4/175 lbs - Worcester, Mass. - Doherty Memorial HS

Adarkwah played an integral role in the Division 4 state title victory this past season. He caught seven touchdowns in five postseason games including a 41-yard score in the championship game. He finished his senior campaign with 12 touchdowns and 620 yards receiving.

Basit Dennis - OL/DL - 6-2/280 lbs - Worcester, Mass. - Worcester Academy

Dennis attended Holy Name before going to Worcester Academy for a post-graduate year this past season. He played on both sides of the ball helping Holy Name reach the Division 2 semifinals in 2012.

T.J. Kelley - WR - 6-6/215 lbs - Shrewsbury, Mass. - St. John's HS

One of the top wide receivers for St. John's during the 2013 season which saw the Pioneers reach the MIAA Division 2 Superbowl. Kelley hauled in nearly 30 catches for over 400 yards and six catches as a senior on the gridiron. A two-sport athlete who excelled in basketball and football, Kelley also led the hoops squad to the state championship game as well.

Andrew Libby - ATH - 6-0/195 lbs - Saco, Maine - Thornton Academy

After being named the 2012 Maine Gatorade Football Player of the Year as a junior, Libby missed the bulk of the 2013 season due to injury. A versatile player on both offense and defense for the Trojans, Libby led Thornton to the Class A State title in 2012 thanks in part to 1,091 yards and 23 touchdowns along with 98 tackles and six interceptions.

Jon Lucier - TE - 6-6/215 lbs - Holden, Mass. - Wachusett Regional HS

Played tight end and wide receiver at Wachusett Regional High School where he served as team captain as a senior. Was a Wachusett All-Star selection. Also a member of the track team where he was a league champion in the javelin and placed 3rd at the district championship in the triple jump. Extremely active off the field as an Eagle Scout, a summer worker at a farm and a one-time back-up singer for Kenny Rogers during a 2012 Holiday concert.

Joe Previte - OL/DL - 6-2/285 lbs - Brockton, Mass. - Northfield Mt. Hermon

Was an All-Massachusetts defensive line selection as a senior at Brockton High School before doing a post-graduate year at Northfield Mt. Hermon the past season. Prep highlights include an 80-yard fumble recovery and return for a touchdown and All-New England accolades following the season. Was a four-year starter at Brockton where he posted 50 tackles as a senior and earned Boston Globe and Boston Herald All-Scholastic honors in 2012. Comes from a football family as both his older brothers, Josh and Sam, were both standout players at Brockton as well.
