Dexter School lefthanded pitcher and outfielder Cam Lanzilli has verbally committed to UMass-Lowell, he announced earlier this evening on his Twitter account.

The Stoneham resident also had an offer from Holy Cross, as well as interest from Bryant and Fairfield, but said UMass-Lowell "was simply the best fit academically and athletically".

"The coaching staff really made it clear what type of program they are trying to build, and I felt like this was something I needed to be a part of," Lanzilli told ESPNBoston.com.

After transferring into Dexter this season from Malden Catholic, Lanzilli made an immediate impact on the mound, going 5-0 with a 1.80 ERA and a save. He also helped his cause at the plate, hitting .370. So far on the summer circuit with North East Baseball, he has gone 4-0 in five appearances.

Armed with four pitches -- an 86-mph fastball, curve, changeup and cutter -- Lanzilli attracted the River Hawks' coaching staff with the way he mixes them up for strikes, as well as his demeanor on the hill.

"They really like my mound presence, and how quickly and confidently I worked on the mound without wasting time and my effort," he said.
