Agawam High rising senior outfielder Joey Mercadante has verbally committed to Long Island University-Brooklyn, he announced yesterday on his Twitter account.

The 5-foot-11 Mercadante, a left-hander, demonstrated great range in centerfield and considerable speed on the basepaths this spring for the Brownies, and also registered .263/.333/.395 totals at the plate.

MassLive.com reports Mercadante was also considering UMass-Lowell and Virginia Commonwealth at the time of his commitment.

Mercadante is the second 2015 prospect from Agawam High to pledge to a Division 1 school. First baseman Seamus Curran, an ESPN Boston All-State Super Team selection this spring, committed to Rhode Island last year.
