Braintree's McNiff changes commitment to Fairfield

Braintree baseball rising senior right-hander Bobby McNiff has decommitted from the University of Rhode Island and changed his verbal commitment to Fairfield University, Wamps head coach Bill O’Connell told ESPN Boston.

“Fairfield’s really heading in the right direction,” O’Connell said. “They made him a nice offer after he decommitted from URI, so it was a great fit.”

McNiff sported a 9-1 record last season for the Division 1A finalists and was named to the ESPN Boston All-State team. He struck out 60 in 69 innings pitched with just 38 hits against and was a driving force behind the Wamps’ Super 8 push, collecting wins against Bridgewater-Raynham and St. John’s Prep in the tournament.

“He throws mid 80s, but he’s got tremendous movement on the ball and a nice slider and a changeup,” O’Connell said. “I think a lot of people when you first see him, he doesn’t have that ‘Wow’ factor, but he throws hard enough to get people out and relies on his movement and his secondary and third pitches to be very effective.”
