Charlestown head coach Edson Cardoso told ESPNBoston.com this afternoon that former guard/forward Akosa Maduegbunam has verbally committed to Penn State for the fall of 2012.

New Nittany Lions head coach Pat Chambers initially offered Maduegbunam a scholarship while he was at Boston University. Maduegbunam was also considering offers from Temple, Drexel, New Hampshire and Iona. Northeastern and St. Bonaventure had also expressed interest.

The 6-foot-3 Maduegbunam was named to ESPNBoston's inaugural MIAA All-State Team this past winter, after a junior season in which he averaged 22 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two steals as the Townies won their first Boston City League title since 2006.

Maduegbunam, who transferred into Charlestown from Cushing Academy as a sophomore, will finish his high school career at Winchendon School starting in the fall. In his two seasons with the Townies, he averaged 20.5 points, seven rebounds, three assists and was a two-time All-City selection.

More details to come later.
