Miller: 'We are on track' in the MVC
By Brian Miller
Andover senior tight end Brian Miller checks in with his third Player Diary installment.
We are now 2-1 on the year, but more importantly we are 1-0 in the MVC. At the beginning of the season, our goal was to win the MVC, and that is what we are on track to do. We struggled in our second game of the season against Gloucester, but our defense battled in the second half and definitely gave us something to work off of.
This past week, we played Tewksbury, which was our conference opener. The team was amped for the game and we came out very strong. At the end of the first half, we were up four touchdowns and the offense was rolling. Our offensive line was opening up giant holes for our running back, Andy Coke, who finished the game with five rushing touchdowns and a sixth through the air. Our run game was very fluid, and we have a lot to work with off of that now.
In the second half, we did not come out as strong as we should have, and we let Tewksbury back into the game. Our safety made a great interception at the end of the game, to stop Tewksbury’s last attempt to try to win it. Although we struggled in the second half of the game, there were a lot of good aspects to the game that we have to look at and get better at in order to win the MVC.
Offensively, our team is really starting to get going both on the ground and through the air. Defensively, we are great on some plays and not so great on others. If we can just be a little more consistent on defense, we are going to be an extremely difficult team to beat. We have Haverhill this week, and the team is pumped to play them because two of our coaches are former coaches at Haverhill. We are going to learn from our mistakes this past week, and continue on towards our goal of winning the MVC and making a statement to all of the other teams in our conference this week.
