Needham claims No.1 in boys' soccer poll
The Division 1 state champions, the Needham Rockets, take over the No. 1 spot in the final ESPN Boston MIAA boys' soccer Top 20 poll for 2012. Needham was described by each opposing coach as the best team that they had faced this season and with a 1-0 win over Amherst in the state finals, Needham clinched the spot as best team in the state.
Groton-Dunstable and Somerville each made big jumps in the rankings with impressive tournament runs. The Crusaders take the No. 2 ranking after winning their second consecutive D2 state title. The Highlanders earned the No. 3 spot by winning the D1 North sectional.
The D1 North and South sectionals proved to be incredibly competitive this season and earned four teams apiece in the Top 10.
Four teams made their debut in the Top 20 in these final rankings.
Medway and North Andover each spent the season on the edge of the top 20 before sectional title runs proved that they both deserved to be ranked. Amherst made the rankings at No. 14 after winning its first ever D1 West sectional title and Watertown's impressive run to the D3 final was rewarded with the No. 18 spot.
