Updated girls hoop Top 25 poll

By Brendan Hall

We updated our statewide MIAA girls basketball Top 25 poll this afternoon. To view it, CLICK HERE.

A few notes and observations:

OA slips into Top 5: Hockomock League power Oliver Ames, one of the state's last remaining unbeatens, slides into the No. 5 position this week following Pentucket's surprising loss Friday to Notre Dame of Hingham. It's the first time the Tigers have made a Top-5 appearance in the three-year history of the poll. Also sliding up with Pentucket's loss is Billerica, at No. 4 -- oddly enough, the Indians' lone loss this season was to those Sachems back in December.

Returns and debuts: Three-time defending D1 state champ Andover is making its first appearance in the poll since the second week of the season, coming in at No. 16 following a win over archrival Central Catholic. After a shaky start following a No. 5 preseason ranking, the Golden Warriors are surging, winners of five of their last six before Tuesday's loss to Billerica. Meanwhile, Notre Dame of Hingham makes its season debut at No. 25, following the Cougars' surprise win over Pentucket. The Cougars' debut marks the first time ever that two independent teams have appeared the poll (Fontbonne comes in this week at No. 12).

Here's how the poll breaks down this week by league affiliation:

Cape Ann - 3
Catholic Central - 3
