St. John's Smiley commits to Navy
By Scott Barboza
St. John's (Shrewsbury) lacrosse junior attackman Andrew Smiley has given a verbal commitment to the United States Naval Academy, he told ESPN Boston Saturday.
The 6-foot-3, 200-pounder is a multi-sport standout with the Pioneers, having been a preseason ESPN Boston lacrosse All-State selection and football All-State selection as quarterback.
He will join the Midshipmen for the 2015-16 season after attending the Academy Preparatory School.
"Coach [Rick] Sowell offered me an admission spot yesterday and I emailed him back today saying I'd take it," Smiley said. "Navy's the best fit for me because it's a great academic school and I always aspired to attend one of the service academies, and it's also a program with a lot of tradition."
Smiley also cited the importance of the Midshipmen's second-year head coach in his decision.
"I believe Coach Sowell can turn the program around to what it used to be, and I want to be a part of that," he said.
As a junior, Smiley set a Central Mass. record for passing yards with 3,123 yards, while completing 62 percent of his pass attempts to go along with 25 touchdown passes.
