Coach Bertoni was a four-year player and team captain at Franklin High School and received his B.S. in PE and Exercise Science at UMASS Boston, where he was also a four-year player and team captain. In his senior season at UMASS, he was named the “Strength & Conditioning” Athlete-of-the-Year for the University. He holds a Masters in Secondary Education from Cambridge College and a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study in Educational Administration from UMASS Boston. For his work in the Boston Public Schools, Bertoni received a Sontag Prize for Exceptional Teaching from the Harvard Graduate School of Education in 2012.
A Level 4 Certified Coach through USA Hockey, his coaching career began at his alma mater UMASS Boston, first as an assistant and then as the head coach, and he has also had stints on the bench as an assistant at Wentworth and Suffolk University. He has served as the head coach at two different high schools as well, pushing his players to raise the overall team GPA and leading his team to the postseason at Somerville, and most recently, at Mystic Valley Regional Charter this past winter. At Mystic Valley, he helped transform a program in only its third year into a disciplined and competitive team that was only one game shy of state tournament qualification.
