Medway OL/DL Cam Smith commits to Lafayette
By Brendan Hall
Medway High Class of 2014 two-way lineman Cam Smith has verbally committed to Lafayette College, his head coach Dave McSweeney told ESPNBoston.com today.
The 6-foot-5, 292-pound Smith attended camp at Lafayette on July 7 and received a scholarship offer afterwards, according to McSweeney. Smith made a commitment to the Leopards a week and a half later. Smith had also gone to one-day camps at Harvard, Brown, UMass, UConn and New Hampshire.
"I'm very happy for Cam and his family," McSweeney said. "He is a hard working young man who I believe will fit in well at Lafayette. I am looking for big things from him in the upcoming season."
Smith was somewhat under the radar until this offseason, having not been named a Tri-Valley League All-Star in his career, but he is an intriguing prospect for a multitude of reasons, primarily his size. He wears his 290-pound frame fairly lean, with long arms, and has yet to fill out. He demonstrates good athleticism for a player of his girth; at the Massachusetts High School Football Coaches Association (MHSFCA) combine at Gillette Stadium last May, he broad jumped 7-feet-11 and recorded a 28-inch vertical leap.
