Prep duo team up to win USHL Clark Cup
By Jeff Cox
Sam Kurker and Brian Pinho’s bid to win a Super 8 title together two seasons ago at St. John’s Prep fell short, but the local duo finally tasted victory together Tuesday night.
Pinho’s third period tally broke a 2-2 tie to give the Indiana Ice the 3-2 win in the decisive Game 5 of the USHL Clark Cup Finals.
Pinho, a Providence College recruit and 2013 graduate of St. John’s Prep, was the second leading scorer on the Ice during the regular season with 28 goals and 28 assists in 59 games played.
A sixth round pick of the Washington Capitals in the 2013 NHL Draft, Pinho collected two goals and four assists during his team’s playoff run.
Kurker joined the Ice midseason after leaving Boston University. A 2012 graduate of St. John’s Prep, the 2012 draft pick of the St. Louis Blues had three goals and three assists in the postseason.
Waterloo, the team Indiana beat in the finals, had a 3-1 lead entering the third period, but couldn’t hold on with the trophy in its grasp.
Canton native and Maine recruit Liam Pecararo was one of the top scoring forwards on the Black Hawks. He had four goals and 10 assists during the postseason to go along with his 61 points during the regular season.
