Castro dominates as Beaver repeats

By Ryan Kilian

CONCORD, Mass. -- After defeating the Bancroft School, 72-35, in the morning semifinal game, Beaver Country Day School (25-1) came out in the afternoon final and won their second consecutive Eastern Independent League championship at Concord Academy. The Beavers defeated Berwick Academy (Maine), 79-56.

BCD’s Rene Castro was outstanding in the final game, scoring 20 of his game high 34 points in the second half.

The Beavers led, 36-25, at the half but Berwick (13-12) would cut the lead to five, 46-41, with 10 minutes remaining in the contest.

“It was a tough game,” Castro said. “We were up big to start the game but they made a good comeback.”

Castro, who averages 20.4 points on the season, took over the game and closed it out for Beaver, as he scored at will in transition and used his speed and athleticism to slice through the Berwick defense.

“My legs are tired,” Castro said after the game. “We had back to back games Wednesday and Thursday last week, practice Friday and then two today but we are looking forward to the playoffs (Class C) next week and getting some home games.”

BCD junior point guard Jherson Colon had 17 points in the game and also scored his 1,000th point last Friday in a win over Concord Academy. Freshman sharpshooter Jeff Spellman also played well for BCD, stroking four threes and scoring 14 points on the day.
Berwick Academy was led by junior point guard and EIL MVP Harrison Rafferty, who scored 17 points in the loss.
