It’s been quite a school year for Rice Memorial seniors Christian McCormick and Austin Robinson.

VermontMcCormick and Robinson helped Rice win the Division II football championship last fall, and each player tossed in a game-high 19 points as Rice won the Division I boys basketball championship Saturday by beating Rutland 55-49 at the University of Vermont’s Patrick Gymnasium.

“So far it’s been a fun year,’ McCormick said. “We’ll see what happens during baseball season.”

Robinson scored seven of his 19 points in the fourth quarter, when Rice outscored Rutland 22-12.

“Never thought I’d win two titles in my senior year,” Robinson said. “Might have to play a spring sport now.”

The victory handed Rice (22-2) its 12th title overall, and third in the last five years.

Alex Snyder, a 6-foot-7 center, led Rutland with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Tre Hysell added 10 points for Rutland (20-3), which was trying to win its first state championship since 1967.

Rutland outscored Rice 19-10 in the third quarter and led 36-33 entering the fourth, but lost to Rice in the postseason for the third consecutive year. Rice beat Rutland 61-58 in overtime during the regular season.
