Needham hires 3 new head coaches for winter

In an email to Boston area reporters, Needham High Athletic Director Micah Hauben announced the hiring of three new head coaches for the winter season.

Girls Basketball: Megan Puopolo
Coach Puopolo, a teacher at the Melican Middle School in Northborough, comes to NHS from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, where she served as an assistant coach for the women’s basketball team for the past three seasons. While at WPI, Coach Puopolo and the Engineers enjoyed tremendous success, posting back-to-back 20-win seasons for just the second time in school history.

Coach Puopolo, a Wallingford, CT native, joined the WPI staff after a standout career at Suffolk University. The 2003 graduate was a four-year letter winner in both basketball and softball, and served as an assistant for the Suffolk softball program in 2004. Before coming to WPI, Puopolo had also coached for the Mass Wildcats AAU basketball program and worked basketball camps at Brandeis and Hoop Mountain. She received her Master's degree from Lesley University in Cambridge, MA.

Wrestling: Paul Ahern (Interim)
A graduate of Needham HS, Coach Ahern was a standout wrestler at NHS, and went on to wrestle collegiately at both Seton Hall and UMASS Boston. He was a three-time All-New England Wrestler. Between 1991-2004, Coach Ahern served as the NHS varsity wrestling assistant coach for seven seasons and has also run the Boston Neighborhood Middle School wrestling program. He currently works for the Boston Public Schools. Coach Ahern will serve as the interim Head Coach for the 2011-12 season.

Boys and Girls Alpine Skiing: Kris Kellenberger
Coach Kellenberger has been named the Head Coach of the NHS Boys & Girls Alpine Ski Teams after working as the assistant coach for the 2010-11 season. Coach Kellenberger ski background includes serving as a ski instructor at Breckenridge, CO, completing the Vail Resorts' ski instructor training program, and being certified by the Professional Ski Instructors of America (PSIA). She has a master’s degree from Lesley University and is currently a visual arts teacher at Hopkinton High School.
