Robert Morris University has hired former Winchendon School boys basketball head coach Mike Byrnes to its coaching staff.

Byrnes will serve as an assistant under Andrew Toole, the youngest Division I head coach at 29 years old. Byrnes graduated Canton High in 1984 and went on to play at UMass, graduating in 1990. His final two years overlapped with John Calipari's first two as head coach.

Brynes coached the last 14 seasons at Winchendon, where he sent numerous kids to Division 1 programs and two to the NBA -- former Celtic Bruno Sundov ('99) and current Sacramento King Francisco Garcia ('02). The Green Wave were a perennial power amongst the New England prep schools on his watch, capturing NEPSAC Class A titles in 1997 and 2004. Last season, they lost to Brewster Academy in the Class A final.
