Friday night, The Newman School of Boston welcomed its first player to the 1,000 point club. Senior Chengye “Berry” Wu reached the milestone with 19 points, 13 rebounds and nine assists in a 61- 47 victory against Rocky Hill (R.I.) to become the first Cardinal to ever reach the 1,000-point plateau.

"I have never seen such an unselfish player as Berry," Newman head coach and athletic director Jeff Iwanicki said in an email. "He is willing to get everyone involved in the scoring when it is apparent that he can get another basket. A tremendous scorer and passer with instincts you can’t teach. Also, he’s a real good kid who has shown our other kids some great tips."

Wu started at Newman as a sophomore and immediately made an impact on the team with his strong skill set and court vision. He helped lead Newman to three MBIL D-2 championships and two NEPSAC Class D appearances, and as a junior was named to the NEPSAC Class D 1st team All Star. Wu has averaged 20 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists per game in his 50 game career.
