There was only one upset in the Division I baseball playoffs Tuesday, but it was a big one.

VermontSouth Burlington, the tournament’s No. 15 seed, received a complete-game pitching performance from Ethan Hanson and knocked off second-seeded Essex 10-7.

Hanson, who struck out four, also hit a three-run home run to give South Burlington a 5-1 lead in the third. Matt Baechle collected three hits for South Burlington, which also received two hits from P.J. Handy.

Essex trailed 10-5 entering the seventh, but scored twice and had the tying run at the plate before Steve Jurkiewicz popped out to end the game.

Essex, which won last year’s Division I title, completed its season with a 13-4 record under first-year coach Chris Richard. South Burlington raised its record to 5-9.

South Burlington wasn’t the only 15th-seeded team that extended its season Tuesday. Middlebury received a complete game from Tyler Provencher and defeated second-seeded Fair Haven 6-5 in the Division II tournament.

Fair Haven, which finished with an 11-6 record, led 3-0 after two innings.

Provencher surrendered seven hits, struck out five and didn’t walk a batter. The victory improved Middlebury’s record to 4-11.
