Boston High School: Sean Smerczysnki

St. John's Prep LB Smerczysnki commits to Holy Cross

June, 24, 2013
St. John's Prep linebacker Sean Smerczynski told tonight that he has verbally committed to Holy Cross for the fall of 2014.

"Coach [Tom] Gilmore sets a daily schedule that blends the academic and football commitments, so the student-athlete can reach his potential in both areas," Smerczynski said. "This approach is exactly the one I have been exposed to, and like, at St. John’s Prep."

The 5-foot-11, 220-pound Danvers resident has been the Eagles' leading tackler the last two seasons. Last fall, he earned a spot on ESPN Boston's All-State Team -- one of only two juniors -- after recording 76 tackles (six for loss), two sacks and a fumble recovery. The Eagles won their first MIAA Division 1 Super Bowl in 15 seasons last fall.

Smerczynski says he had "serious discussions" with a number of Ivy, Patriot, Northeast and Division 3 NESCAC schools, "which made the decision difficult", he said. Yale, Dartmouth, Brown and Harvard are some of those notables, along with Bryant, Colgate, Georgetown and Albany.
