Mission's Tianna Johnson commits to Hampton

11/14/2011

New Mission senior guard Tianna Johnson has verbally committed to Hampton University this afternoon, the school's athletic director Cory McCarthy confirmed.

The 5-foot-6 Johnson chose the Pirates over offers from UNC-Wilmington, Tennessee-Chattanooga, Central Connecticut State and Morgan State. She is expected to sign her National Letter of Intent on Wednesday.

Johnson averaged 22 points, seven assists, six steals and four rebounds for the Titans, who lost to Hull in the Division 4 state championship last March at TD Garden.

"I expect Tianna to go to Hampton and contribute right away," said McCarthy, who also coached her this summer on the Boston Warriors AAU squad. "She's a Division 1 point guard with undeniable court vision and ballhandling. You can quote me on this -- she has the hands of a bear, and that allows her to dribble the ball like a magician.

"She has a good, strong work ethic, she's still learning the game but she will flourish in coach David Six's system. Hampton has been to the NCAA tournament a lot the last few years, and she'll go in and contribute right away. It's ideal for her to be at school like Hampton. It's got a small school feeling coming from a small school like New Mission, with a family atmosphere. That will definitely contribute to her success going forward, it'll be an easier transition than if she went to a larger school."
