Wes Welker's Q&A with the media

BRAINTREE, Mass. -- Receiver Wes Welker's Q&A with media members at the Old Spice Wes Welker Football Camp today:

Good to see your teammates Julian Edelman and Tully Banta-Cain out here?

“Yeah, absolutely. The guys have always been great. I asked a few guys come to out. I have a few more coming tomorrow. It’s good to have guys out here, helping out, seeing how they interact with the kids. It’s good to see them out here.”

People want to know where you are with your rehab…

“Yeah, it’s going good so far. It’s a long process but I feel like I’m making a lot of strides.”

Still too early to set a timetable for return?

“Yeah, it’s way early. We’ll see what happens. My plan is to keep working hard and keep doing the things I’ve been doing to get to where I am now, and just keep on doing that stuff.”

Do you feel any pain whatsoever?

“No, it’s fine. I guess that’s a good thing. I’m just trying to stay pain free. If you’re feeling pain, you need to stop doing whatever you’re doing. We’ll move along pretty well.”

Happy with progress?

“Yeah, absolutely. It’s gone as good as expected so far. Hopefully we stay on that track and keep on progressing every day.”

Had Tom Brady helped you from going through same thing last year?

“We talk quite a bit [about] feeling the same type of pains, the same type of things we went through from the start. He’s like ‘I remember at that time, I was doing this.’ It’s been good to have somebody make sure that all the stuff I’m feeling is right.”

How tough was it to sit and watch playoffs?

“It’s tough. Especially you work so hard to get to that point. That’s what you work for, all the offseason training, everything you do, is to get to that point and then all of a sudden it’s over. It’s tough to watch. I think it makes you stronger for the next go-around and make sure you do everything possible to make sure you’re there, and you’re not having setbacks with injuries or anything like that, and making sure your body is ready to go.”

Did you go back and watch the play in which you were injured?

“You know, it was on ESPN enough, I’ve seen it plenty of times. There is no sense of rehashing all that stuff. Just moving forward and moving on with my career.”

You are very involved with drills here at this camp. Not everyone who hosts a camp does that. What went into that decision?

“I know if I was going to a camp, and parents paid money for a camp or anything like that, you don’t want to cheat those people. You want to make sure you’re giving your all out there and kids are having fun out there and giving their all. It’s almost setting an example for them – how you want to get out there and get involved, run around with them, and do all those type of things. If I’m sitting on the sidelines, they’re kind of sitting around, kind of doing whatever. So I make sure I get involved and have fun with these kids.”

Happy with the way the camp has progressed from last year?

“Absolutely. We have over the double the numbers [of campers] we had last year. Its grown. Seeing all the parents, looking at the sidelines here, it’s been really cool to see, and all the kids really getting involved.”

What are your thoughts on some of the additions to the receiving corps – Torry Holt, David Patten?

“I’m very pleased. We definitely needed some help in that area. It’s something we’ve been strong with, but it’s something that you’re always looking to improve. I felt like we did that this offseason. Hopefully we just keep progressing as a unit and make sure we’re all playing together and getting on the same page and doing the right things out there on the field.”

Does this give you the itch to get back on the field?

“That’s every day. I always want to get back in the swing of things, and get back out there. Watching minicamps is going to be tough for me, so it’s hard, but it’s something you have to do. I’m ready to face that challenge and get back there as soon as possible.”

How do you deal with any frustration in the rehab?

“I work out. I try and get my quad stronger, my hamstring and calf stronger, the muscles around my knee, my shoulder, everything. Try to get everything stronger and push myself to get back there as soon as possible.”

Do you have to guard against doing too much because you might be feeling too good?

“I don’t. I think that is everybody else’s feeling on it, that I’m pushing too much – or ‘do this or do that.’ But I feel like I do the right amount and try to push it as much as I can and as far as I can without doing anything bad to it. Just make sure I’m progressing and pushing it along as much as possible.”

How have you split your time between here and California?

“Wherever they want me – if they want me here, I’m here. If they’re good with me leaving and getting some work there, then I get my work there. They know me and they know I’m going to be working in whatever I’m doing. I think that’s pretty evident when they saw me that things have been moving along and we’ve been making progress.”

What type of responsibilities do you have within the team here?

“To get back as soon as possible. Obviously I’m going to work hard and do whatever I need to do and whatever I feel like is best for me and best for the football team to get back there on the football field. That’s goal number one, and that’s all I’m really working towards.”

What are your plans for next couple of weeks with organized team activities starting? Is it useful for you to be here for that or better to just get back to your training in California?

“I think it’s good to be here. I’m going to be around here, in Boston, for the next month working and seeing the guys and watching the films and all the minicamps, critiquing guys and things we can do better, things that we can work on. That’s kind of why I’ll be around. I’ll be more of the veteran type guy, hanging out, and rehabbing at the same time and doing all that stuff.”

Have you been throwing with Tom Brady at all, and if so, how much?

“Yeah, a little bit. Once, twice a week, just kind of whatever we fit in and trying to get in the groove of getting my hands on the ball, and catching some.”

Is it more just standing still? Are you actually jogging at all?

“I don’t know. We just kind of do some stuff out there. [media laughs].”

How does Brady look?

“He looks really good. He’s working hard, he’s getting after it. It’s always ‘one more’ with him. If it’s not perfect, it’s ‘another one, another one.’ He’s like ‘two more to this side’ and I’m like ‘So that’s about 10.’ You love to see it, but at the same time, you’re looking at your watch and like ‘My parking sticker is about to run out of time here. Let’s go.’ It’s good to see.”

When you went down, what were your thoughts about your teammates who came to support you?

“It was almost too much. Everybody was great. All the teammates stood behind me, always sent texts or called or whatever. It was good to see.”

You’ve been a model of consistency over your career, not missing a start from 2007-2009. How much has that been a motivation during your rehab to keep that intact?

“It’s real important. I want to be very consistent every time I’m out there, and make sure I’m doing everything possible to get open, every single play, against every single coverage no matter what it is. Definitely being able to show up at practices and meetings and doing all that stuff is going to go towards that consistency. I’m definitely always working towards being consistent out there.”

Mentally, when the time comes to be out there, how nervous are you for that?

“I don’t think so. I’m going to cut so many times before I actually get out there that I want to get to the point where I’m not even thinking about it, where it’s second nature going out there doing my job to the best of my ability.”
