Resetting Patriots receiving corps

5/27/2010

When the Patriots informed receiver Isaiah Stanback that he had been released Thursday, the message was that it was a numbers crunch. The team was stocked at receiver.

Stanback contributed in a few different ways in 2009.

Early in the season, when he was working more at quarterback as a practice squad member, he traveled to road games and kept charts on the sideline (fans might remember him holding a white board to help signal in part of the play at the Week 2 Jets game). He later worked more at receiver and that's where he ultimately broke through on the active roster. His most extensive playing time came against the Colts (42 of his 105 offensive snaps) in emergency duty.

This year, Stanback was going to face an uphill climb for a roster spot after the Patriots signed veteran Torry Holt to a one-year deal and drafted Taylor Price in the third round.

Here is a look at the projected receiver depth chart:

Randy Moss

Wes Welker (projects to start year on PUP)

Julian Edelman

Torry Holt

Brandon Tate

Taylor Price

Sam Aiken

Matthew Slater

David Patten

Darnell Jenkins

Buddy Farnham

Bryan Anderson
