Second-year safety Patrick Chung was the topic of a piece Monday on ESPNBoston.com, as his versatility and playmaking skills could provide a boost to the defense.

Chung played in approximately 20 percent of the team's defensive snaps last season. The following was his defensive playtime chart:

Sept. 14 (Bills) -- 0
Sept. 20 (Jets) -- 2
Sept. 27 (Falcons) -- 0
Oct. 4 (Ravens) -- 1
Oct. 11 (Broncos) -- 0
Oct. 18 (Titans) -- 16
Oct. 25 (Buccaneers) -- 36
Nov. 8 (Dolphins) -- 31
Nov. 15 (Colts) -- 41
Nov. 22 (Jets) -- 5
Nov. 30 (Saints) -- 12
Dec. 6 (Dolphins) -- 40
Dec. 13 (Panthers) -- 9
Dec. 20 (Bills) -- 0
Dec. 27 (Jaguars) -- 0
Jan. 3 (Texans) -- 7

ANALYSIS: Like many rookies, the Patriots started Chung slowly, before letting him loose toward the middle of the season. Yet down the homestretch, the team reeled him back in and his playing time dipped considerably. Part of the late-season dip was because the Patriots were in more base alignments, but it also seemed as if the coaches decided to go with more experience down the stretch. Chung talked Monday about one of the big lessons he learned in his rookie season was relaxing on the field, as sometimes he was going so fast that it affected his play. He looks like a more confident player on the practice field. To earn more playing time, that confidence will have to yield more consistency.
