The Patriots announced the signing of running back Thomas Clayton today, while releasing three players -- quarterback Mike Teel, punter David King and receiver Bryan Anderson.
Clayton (5-11, 222) entered the NFL in 2007 as a sixth-round draft choice of the San Francisco 49ers. He has not registered any official regular-season statistics.
Clayton, who played at Kansas State, will be a long shot to earn a roster spot at a position that has Laurence Maroney, Sammy Morris, Fred Taylor, Kevin Faulk, BenJarvus Green-Ellis, Pat Paschall and Chris Taylor already on the depth chart.
As for the three players released, all were long shots for a roster spot.
Teel had been claimed on waivers from the Seahawks on May 24 and was viewed as competition for rookie Zac Robinson (seventh round, 250th overall) for either a third quarterback spot on the 53-man roster or a practice squad spot. King was an Australian Rules Football Player, while Anderson signed as a rookie free agent out of Central Michigan.
