Second-year running back Thomas Clayton, who will be battling longshot odds to earn a roster spot, has switched to jersey No. 35. He was previously No. 46.

Rookie free agent Pat Paschall, who was released by the Patriots last month, had been wearing No. 35.

Clayton joins Laurence Maroney, Kevin Faulk, Sammy Morris, Fred Taylor, BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Chris Taylor on the running back depth chart.

The Patriots kept five running backs on the roster coming out of training camp last season. That number could be reduced to four in 2010 as the Patriots currently project to carry three pure tight ends (one more than last season) and could look to the running back spot as an area to trim.
