ESPNBoston.com intern Mike Rodak files his observations from practice:
Caserio’s new role. Director of Player Personnel Nick Caserio, who assisted new wide receivers coach Chad O’Shea in coaching the team’s wide receivers last season, looks like he is turning over the duties completely to O’Shea this year. Caserio, however, was spotted helping out the newest addition to the Patriots coaching staff, Corwin Brown, who is tutoring the team’s safeties. In one drill, Caserio, a former college quarterback, threw passes to the safeties.
Players working on the side. On the far end of the practice fields, recovering wide receiver Wes Welker was seen working with a member of the team’s training staff, running sprints as well as doing cutting and resistance drills. Elsewhere, defensive lineman Ron Brace and wide receiver Sam Aiken were seen out-of-uniform running with strength and conditioning coach Mike Woicik.
New look at tight end. With three new tight ends this season -- veteran Alge Crumpler and rookies Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez -- a question entering training camp was which one would emerge to see the most playing time going into the season. That question wasn’t answered today, as all three tight ends rotated their reps with the first-team offensive line and Tom Brady.
Tom Brady to Randy Moss on a long bomb. During 11-on-11 work, Tom Brady finished off an unconventional play with a long pass to Randy Moss, who caught the ball next to the near pylon, drawing the loudest cheer of the day from the crowd.
Vince Wilfork makes his mark. During 11-on-11 red zone work late in practice, Vince Wilfork broke through the line and disrupted a Sammy Morris run in the backfield, leading to an enthused Wilfork acknowledging the crowd. Linebacker Thomas Williams continued to see time at fullback during this drill, as had been the case during offseason minicamps.
Focusing on a backup lineman. After missing all of last season with an injury, second-year offensive lineman George Bussey (2009 fifth-round pick) returned to the practice field on Thursday morning, seeing the majority of his time at offensive tackle.
Penalty lap for mistake. Rookie quarterback Zac Robinson and center Ryan Wendell ran a lap during full team drills, presumably after a bad snap exchange between the two.
