FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- At the end of every day of training camp, ESPNBoston.com will post one blog entry highlighting the key news of the day:

Logan Mankins a no-show; Nick Kaczur steps in. As expected, starting left guard Mankins did not report for training camp as he is not under contract. Kaczur worked at left guard. Asked how much experience he's had playing guard in games, Kaczur's reply was quick: "None," he said.

Derrick Burgess considering retirement; outside linebacker spot a concern. Veteran outside linebacker Derrick Burgess did not report for training camp and is considering retirement, ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports. With the Patriots releasing Shawn Crable on Wednesday, the personnel at outside linebacker is thin. Tully Banta-Cain and Rob Ninkovich were the first players in drills at that spot. Rookie Jermaine Cunningham (second round, 53rd overall) is also getting a lot of work.

Not everyone ready to practice. Receiver Wes Welker headlined a group of four players who did not practice, but who worked with strength and conditioning coach Mike Woicik and assistant Harold Nash during the session. Welker remains on the active/physically unable to perform list and Bill Belichick made the point that "the last 10 to 20 percent of those injuries is the hardest part to get back." Defensive lineman Ron Brace and receivers Sam Aiken and Darnell Jenkins were the other players to not practice. In addition, reserve receiver/special teamer Matt Slater and reserve safety Bret Lockett left the afternoon practice with injuries.
