FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – How much should be read into running back Laurence Maroney not playing for the second preseason game in a row?

That was a question pondered early Friday morning after the Patriots’ 36-35 loss to the Rams.

Patriots coach Bill Belichick made the point that the Patriots hardly had the ball and that was the reason Maroney didn’t play. Earlier this preseason, Belichick mentioned that the running backs would be part of a rotation as a chance to get them into a rhythm, and this has been the breakdown:

RAMS
Sammy Morris – 16 of 39
Kevin Faulk – 15 of 39
BenJarvus Green-Ellis – 10 of 39

FALCONS
Fred Taylor – 20 of 65
Sammy Morris – 18 of 65
BenJarvus Green-Ellis – 16 of 65
Thomas Clayton – 8 of 65
Kevin Faulk – 6 of 65

SAINTS
BenJarvus Green-Ellis – 21 of 67
Chris Taylor – 17 of 67
Laurence Maroney – 12 of 67
Thomas Clayton – 7 of 67
Sammy Morris – 7 of 67
Kevin Faulk – 3 of 67

So when adding up the numbers, the running back snaps look like this:

BenJarvus Green-Ellis -- 47
Sammy Morris – 36
Kevin Faulk – 24
Fred Taylor – 20
Chris Taylor -- 17
Thomas Clayton -- 15
Laurence Maroney -- 12
