In another tough blow for the Patriots secondary, the team placed veteran safety Brandon McGowan on season-ending injured reserve (chest).

McGowan, a six-year veteran, was an important cog to the defense with his ability to match up with opposing tight ends and play in the box. He did not project to start, but would have been used in a variety of sub packages.

McGowan's injury status likely led the team to trade for Jarrad Page, who could play a similar role.

The Patriots lost cornerback Leigh Bodden (torn rotator cuff) to season-ending injured reserve on Tuesday, so the club's depth in the secondary is being tested before the season even begins.
