The Patriots announced the release of fourth-year outside linebacker Marques Murrell today.
The team had to make a roster move with offensive lineman Quinn Ojinnaka coming off the suspended list. It's a bit of a surprise that it's Murrell, who was active and played in the team's season opener against the Bengals.
Murrell had started the Patriots' first two preseason games at outside linebacker, although fifth-year veteran Rob Ninkovich started at that spot Sunday. Murrell came on in a backup role, was credited with one tackle, and also played on the kickoff return unit Sunday.
Without Murrell, the Patriots have three outside linebackers on the roster: Tully Banta-Cain, Ninkovich and Jermaine Cunningham.
In making the move with Murrell, the Patriots still keep veteran offensive lineman Nick Kaczur on the active roster. Kaczur has a significant back injury, but the team is still holding out hope that he could return this season.
