EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J.. – First impressions from the Patriots’ 28-14 loss to the Jets at New Meadowlands Stadium:

What it means: With a chance to put the Jets into an early 0-2 hole this season, and with All-Pro cornerback Darrelle Revis out for the second half with a hamstring injury, the Patriots blew a terrific opportunity. Leading 14-10 at the half, the Patriots fizzled in the second half. The team was beaten in every aspect over the final 30 minutes.

What’s next: The Patriots return home to face the Buffalo Bills, who have scored 17 points this season in losses to the Dolphins and Packers.

Penalties and mental mistakes cost Patriots: Simply put, the Patriots had too many penalties and mental mistakes to win on the road. When a game turns so quickly after halftime, it also shines a spotlight on the coaching and lack of adjustments.

Brady outplayed by Sanchez: In a script that was unexpected, Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was outplayed by heavily scrutinized Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez. Brady seemed intent on getting Randy Moss the ball in the third quarter, but was intercepted twice.

Butler’s day to forget: The second-year cornerback struggled for much of the contest, whether it was in one-on-matchups in the end zone with receiver Braylon Edwards or with pass interference penalties. Butler is often in position to make a play on the ball, but doesn’t close the deal. Rookie Devin McCourty also had his struggles, but to a lesser degree.

Moss’ great catch, and Hernandez big plays, the highlights: It means little in the big picture, but receiver Randy Moss turned in a jaw-dropping play, a 34-yard, one-handed touchdown catch in the second quarter against cornerback Darrelle Revis. That was the play in which Revis re-injured his hamstring and did not return. Also, rookie tight end Aaron Hernandez delivered two big plays in the losing effort.
