FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Rookie inside linebacker Brandon Spikes, who was added to the injury report on Saturday (probable, calf), is currently testing the injury on the field.
Spikes is being watched closely by linebackers coach Matt Patricia, assistant strength coach Harold Nash, head trainer Jim Whalen and strength coach Mike Woicik, an indication that he is a game-time decision.
Spikes' condition figures to have a trickle-down effect on the team's decision-making process.
With just 45 players active on game-day, an extra layer of depth might be needed. Rookie Dane Fletcher has been inactive for the first two games and he could find his way on to the game-day roster.
If Spikes isn't deemed healthy enough to play, third-year man Gary Guyton would likely take his spot in the base 3-4 defense.
