FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- The Patriots signed running back Thomas Clayton to their active roster on Thursday, releasing offensive lineman Quinn Ojinnaka to make room on the roster.
Clayton, who spent the preseason with the Patriots before being released on Sept. 4, was on the practice squad of the Cleveland Browns. In signing Clayton off another team’s practice squad, Clayton will have to count against the Patriots’ 53-man roster limit for at least the next three weeks, which includes the upcoming bye week.
The move would seem to indicate that veteran running back Fred Taylor, who missed Wednesday’s practice with a toe injury, with not be ready to go in time for Monday night’s game against the Miami Dolphins. Including Taylor and Clayton, the Patriots also have running backs Sammy Morris, BenJarvus Green-Ellis, and Danny Woodhead on their active roster, as well as Javarris James on the practice squad.
Ojinnaka was acquired via a trade with the Atlanta Falcons on August 23 (compensation not announced). After missing the Patriots’ season-opener due to a prior one-game NFL suspension, Ojinnaka was inactive for the next two games before being released.
