Groupings highlight Pats' balance

MIAMI GARDENS -- A look at the positional groupings utilized by the Patriots in their 41-14 win over the Dolphins:

2 WR/2 TE/1 RB -- 31 of 58

3 WR/1 TE/1 RB -- 18 of 58

1 WR/3 TE/1 RB -- 5 of 58

3 TE/1 FB/1 RB -- 2 of 58

4 WR/1 TE -- 1 of 58

1 WR/2 TE/1 FB/1 RB -- 1 of 58

(Penalties included, 2-point conversion included, no kneel-downs included.)

ANALYSIS: The Patriots' third offensive possession, which helped settle them down, came primarily out of multiple tight end groupings with a focus on the run. Their ability to gain ground in those groupings helped generate momentum, which only grew when the three-receiver package sliced up the Dolphins on the fourth possession. The Patriots' ability to call on both groupings at various points of the game defined their performance on offense. Once again, the groupings highlight how the tight end position has become a bigger part of the offense.
