The Patriots announce the promotion of cornerback Tony Carter from the practice squad to the 53-man active roster today.

Carter (5-foot-9, 175 pounds) has been on the Patriots' practice squad all season. On his Twitter account, he said, "Timing is everything."

The former Florida State product, who played two games last season for the Broncos, has earned four practice player of the week honors this season with the Patriots. Those honors go to the players who coaches feel best prepared the team in the days leading up to a victory.

With Carter's promotion, the Patriots released cornerback Chevis Jackson to make room on the 53-man roster. The decision to promote Carter could be tied to the availability of rookie cornerback Devin McCourty, who is questionable with a rib injury. The Patriots now have McCourty, Kyle Arrington, Darius Butler and Carter on the cornerback depth chart.
