A feel for the 74th draft pick

March, 30, 2011
Now that compensatory draft choices have been awarded by the NFL, the exact spots of each Patriots draft pick is known. Prior to last Friday, only the spots in the first, second and third round were solidified.

1a. 17th overall
1b. 28th overall
2a. 33rd overall
2b. 60th overall
3a. 74th overall
3b. 92nd overall
4. 125th overall
5. 159th overall
6. 193rd overall

A look at some of the recent players picked in those spots have been highlighted. On Saturday, the 193 spot was in focus, and on Sunday it was the 159 spot, followed by 125 and 92.

Today, it's the 74th spot (third round):

2010: DT D'Anthony Smith (Jaguars)
2009: RB Glen Coffee (49ers)
2008: LB Dan Connor (Panthers)
2007: WR Yamon Figurs (Ravens)
2006: RB Brian Calhoun (Lions)
2005: DE Justin Tuck (Giants)
2004: DT Tim Anderson (Bills)

ANALYSIS: Justin Tuck is the star of the group and the question looking back is how he fell this far. Tuck is a good example of the challenge talent evaluators face on a yearly basis, as he was coming out of Notre Dame after an injury-filled junior season. He had looked dominant as a sophomore (2005 USA Today scouting report) before seeing his production drop as a junior. He also had one sack in his first two NFL seasons before breaking out, a reminder that sometimes it takes rookies time to develop before they emerge.
