FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Running back Shane Vereen held a conference call with reporters after he was selected by the Patriots with the 56th overall selection. A few highlights:
Prides self on being all-around back. Vereen was asked how he would describe himself as a running back and he said he takes pride in excelling in all facets of the position -- catching the ball, pass protection, running the ball. He pinpointed pass protection as the area that could use improvement. He has also been a kickoff and punt returner.
Interest in sports media. Vereen was an intern last summer at Comcast SportsNet Bay Area. "I just wanted to learn the in's and out's of the sports media, because that's always been one of the things I've been passionate about, and one of my goals," he said. "I just wanted to learn all the background things and all the work that goes in to putting a sports show together," he said.
Comparisons to Jahvid Best. Vereen was asked what he learned from Best, his former Cal teammate now with the Detroit Lions, and if there are similarities between them. "We learned so much from each other," he said. "I think we are very similar. He is maybe a step, two steps faster than I am, but our game is very similar. I don't see many things that are different in the way that we play."
