At a time when owners and players can't find middle ground in labor negotiations, this "media advisory" from the Patriots caught the eye: Safety Patrick Chung will be joining owner Robert Kraft at the annual Raytheon "Science of Sports" Science Fair at Gillette Stadium this Sunday.
The annual "Science of Sports" Science Fair is one of the many events held through the team's charitable foundation. It highlights the partnership between the team and Raytheon (which was a driving force in the creation of the club's impressive Hall of Fame), while teaching students from New England Boys & Girls Clubs, through sports, the principles of math and science.
The members of the top three winning teams will be announced Sunday, and will receive a $1,000 (Grand Prize), $750 (Second Place) or $500 (Third Place) scholarship. Chung will serve as one of the judges along with Kraft and Raytheon CEO William H. Swanson.
How does this happen during the lockout?
The league allows such an arrangement for any pre-existing community relations events that are part of a yearly tradition (e.g. annual golf tournament). This is one of the first for the Patriots during the lockout.
So while owners and players remain at odds at the negotiating table, that won't stop Kraft and Chung from teaming up on Sunday.
