ESPN The Magazine produces its ninth-annual "Best Franchise in Sports" ranking this week (it hits newsstands Friday), looking at the four major professional sports leagues and producing a list from 1 to 122.
The Patriots finish 38th.
The formula for coming up with the ranking includes eight different categories -- “bang for the buck” (24.3 percent), players (16.6 percent), fan relations (16.5 percent), affordability (14.1 percent), stadium experience (9.1 percent), ownership (9.0 percent), title track (6.7 percent), and coaching (3.9 percent).
The Patriots rank first in the coaching category. From an overall team perspective, the Patriots are the highest ranked franchise in New England, followed by the Celtics (40), Bruins (72) and Red Sox (79).
The Packers earn the No. 1 spot in the rankings.
