A third-round pick of the Patriots in 2009, linebacker Tyrone McKenzie's time in New England ended on November 6 of last season after the Patriots granted his request to be released from the team's practice squad.

McKenzie joined the practice squad of the Buccaneers, and was promoted to the 53-man roster for the final three games of the season.

This offseason, McKenzie has emerged as a leader among the Tampa Bay defense, contacting other Buccaneers players and organizing offseason workouts.

"Tyrone is a different kind of dude," Buccaneers quarterback Josh Freeman told Anwar S. Richardson of the Tampa Tribune. "From the day we picked him up, he's always had that confidence, the sort of qualities leaders possess.

"He came in humbled, worked as hard as he could, and this offseason has been a great opportunity for him to step up and show his leadership skills."
