The Buffalo Bills claimed Patriots fifth-round pick Lee Smith on waivers from the Patriots, while the Bengals claimed receiver Brandon Tate from the Patriots, ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter reports.

Smith was a candidate to return to the Patriots practice squad, although he had been overtaken by rookie free agent Will Yeatman in the preseason.

Tate, the team's No. 3 receiver and top kickoff returner last year, was not eligible for the practice squad.
