Rookie free-agent tight end Will Yeatman was ready to sign on to the Patriots practice squad today when he was informed that he had been claimed on waivers by the Miami Dolphins, according to a league source.
This is a blow for the Patriots, who kept just Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez on the 53-man roster at tight end.
The team was likely hoping that one of their young tight ends -- Yeatman or fifth-round pick Lee Smith - would make it through waivers. Instead, both were claimed by other teams -- Yeatman by Miami and Smith by Buffalo.
It's the unpredictable side of the business.
After spending the last month-plus developing Yeatman and Smith, the Patriots' work could now benefit two of their division rivals.
