Spikes, Vereen, Mallett inactive

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. -- The Patriots have announced their final three inactive players for tonight's game:

LB Brandon Spikes

RB Shane Vereen

QB Ryan Mallett

Those three players join the following players, who were declared out yesterday:

RT Sebastian Vollmer

WR Taylor Price

C/G Ryan Wendell

DE Jermaine Cunningham

This means veteran defensive lineman Albert Haynesworth is active and expected to play tonight.

Spikes being inactive isn't a major surprise, as he didn't play in the preseason after injuring his ankle. He has been working his way back into condition over the last week, and with the Dolphins having a dual threat in running back Reggie Bush, linebackers Dane Fletcher and Gary Guyton looked like a better fit for this matchup.

Vereen, the team's second-round pick, has been limited by a hamstring injury. By having Vereen inactive, the Patriots enter tonight with three running backs -- BenJarvus Green-Ellis, Danny Woodhead and Stevan Ridley.

With no third quarterback rule this year in the NFL, teams have to count a third quarterback among their 46 players on the game-day roster. Bill Belichick has elected for an extra position player over a third quarterback.
