Linebacker A.J. Edds has cleared waivers and has agreed to return to the Patriots on the team's practice squad, according to a source.
Edds, who played 10 defensive snaps and was on three special teams units in Sunday's win over the Chargers, was waived on Thursday to make room for linebacker Jeff Tarpinian. His locker remained intact at Gillette Stadium today, tipping off the possibility of his return if he cleared waivers.
The Patriots will have to create a spot on the eight-man practice squad for Edds, and that move could come Saturday.
The club has an open spot on its 53-man roster after releasing tight end Dan Gronkowski on Friday, and practice squad players like offensive tackle Tom Welch and safety Ross Ventrone could be promoted for depth/special teams purposes on Sunday against the Bills.
