The Patriots announced the promotion of practice squad safety Ross Ventrone today. To make room for Ventrone on the 53-man roster, the team released cornerback Phillip Adams.
This looks to be a case of the Patriots needing more depth at safety than cornerback.
Safety Josh Barrett is questionable with thumb and hamstring injuries and Ventrone adds insurance if he can't go (both on defense and special teams).
Meanwhile, it's hard to imagine the Patriots would release Adams if cornerbacks Leigh Bodden (groin) and/or Ras-I Dowling (hip) -- both of whom are questionable -- wouldn't be ready.
