FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Analysis from the inactive players for the Patriots:
Faulk a surprise scratch. While he was questionable with a knee injury, running back Kevin Faulk's deactivation is still a surprise. Faulk played 39 of 58 snaps last week in his first game back, and it could have been a case of too much, too soon. BenJarvus Green-Ellis, Stevan Ridley, Danny Woodhead and Shane Vereen are the four active backs today.
Edelman active after tumultuous week. Receiver/returner Julian Edelman is active, and his presence could be the boost that the team's return game is seeking. Edelman was arrested early Tuesday morning (link here), and while some speculated that could end his tenure with the team, that hasn't been the case. Edelman was a healthy scratch last week. He hasn't played since the Oct. 2 game in Oakland.
Price can't break through. On Tuesday, offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien said the Patriots were looking to get second-year receiver Taylor Price on the field. But Price is inactive today. It could be related to injury, as he was added to the injury report Saturday (hamstring).
Rib keeps Ellis out at DE. Veteran Shaun Ellis, who was knocked out of last Sunday's Steelers game with a rib injury in the first half, isn't ready to go. Second-year player Brandon Deaderick is a candidate to take Ellis' reps in the base 4-3 at left end.
Cunningham a healthy scratch again. The disappointing season of second-year defensive end Jermaine Cunningham continues, as he is a healthy scratch for the second straight week. Cunningham has been bumped down the depth chart with veterans Andre Carter and Mark Anderson taking his playing time. Last week, tight end Dan Gronkowski assumed Cunningham's role on the punt return unit.
Quick personnel hits. Safety Josh Barrett is active for the first time since Oct. 2 against the Raiders. ... Defensive lineman Ron Brace is active, one day after being promoted off the physically unable to perform list. ... With offensive lineman Donald Thomas inactive, the Patriots have Ryan Wendell as their backup center/guard, with Nate Solder/Sebastian Vollmer the second/third tackles.
