FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Patriots backup quarterback Brian Hoyer's work in preparing the starting defense for unfamiliar Chiefs quarterback Tyler Palko was acknowledged by coaches today.

Hoyer was named one of three practice players of the week, along with defensive end/linebacker Jermaine Cunningham and practice squad linebacker Mike Rivera.

Hoyer knew Palko from their college days, starting when Hoyer visited Pittsburgh, where Palko was the starting quarterback. Hoyer ultimately attended Michigan State and crossed paths with Palko again when Michigan State and Pittsburgh played each other.

While Hoyer is right-handed, he spent more time in practice last week rolling out to his left in an attempt to duplicate the left-handed Palko, who was making his first career NFL start Monday.
