The Patriots worked out defensive end Cedric McKinley on Wednesday, the team announced.
The 24-year old McKinley signed with the Vikings in 2010 as an undrafted free agent out of Minnesota, but was released before training camp and spent the rest of the season out of football. He re-joined the Vikings for the 2011 preseason, and has spent parts of this season on the Vikings' practice squad.
At 6-foot-6, 282 pounds, McKinley would fit at defensive end in the Patriots' heavier 4-3 scheme. While defensive end Jermaine Cunningham was placed on injured reserve on Saturday, the team signed veteran Eric Moore to replace him, while rookies Markell Carter and Alex Silvestro are on the practice squad at the position.
