Charting base vs. sub defense

Each week during the season, the packages the Patriots are utilizing on defense have been charted, focusing on defensive backs.

With a package that has four defensive backs, that has been classified as base. With five or more defensive backs, that is referred to as a sub defense.

The Patriots leaned havier on the base D last Sunday in Denver against the Tim Tebow option attack. Of 29 snaps in the first half, 22 came out of base personnel. The numbers ended up evening out by the end of the game, as the Patriots played more sub in the second half after taking the lead.
