FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- The Patriots continued the process of bringing players in for workouts, likely with 2012 in mind. Teams around the NFL have been signing players to "futures" contracts (which go into effect when the 2012 league year begins), and of the three players the team had in Friday, receiver Johnnie Lee Higgins has the most experience.

A third-round draft choice of the Raiders in 2007, he has played in 60 career regular-season games, with 11 starts. Higgins, out of Texas El-Paso, totaled 57 receptions for 779 yards with the Raiders.

He signed with the Eagles this past offseason, but was released at the start of training camp. Higgins, who also served as a punt returner and part-time kickoff returner, did not play with a team in 2011. He had three touchdowns on punt returns in 2008.

In addition to Higgins, the Patriots had linebacker Mario Harvey (Marshall) and defensive back Tim Atchinson (Baylor) in for workouts. Both were undrafted free agents in 2011.
